One of my favorite ways to relax is through meditation. Even if you’re not someone who enjoys sitting still, try spending just a few minutes each day focusing on your breathing or repeating a mantra (think ohm). By clearing your mind and focusing on something that isn’t stressful, you can help yourself find inner peace. If you can’t sit still for long periods of time, focus on progressive muscle relaxation instead. Progressive muscle relaxation requires about 20 minutes total—just focus on one muscle group at a time, tensing it as hard as you can and then releasing it—and even people who think they hate meditation are often surprised by how much they enjoy PMR.
Exercise is known to help bring calmness and a sense of balance into your life. When you feel stressed, exercise can be extremely effective at helping you regain control. You don’t need a gym membership or expensive equipment; even 20 minutes of walking can work wonders when it comes to mental health. Before you hit publish, make sure your post includes an exercise for readers—it could be as simple as trying one new activity each week.
Although it might sound a little hokey, journaling is a great way to get in touch with your feelings. If you feel overwhelmed or anxious, take out your journal and write down what’s going on with you. Don’t censor yourself: Just get everything out on paper (or tablet). One really great way to increase your happiness is by helping other people – not only will you make someone else’s day a little better, but you will improve your own outlook on life and feel more gratitude for what you have! Try volunteering at a local animal shelter or helping neighbors with their garden. It can be so gratifying knowing that your efforts are helping others and it is totally worth it!
Visualizing your goals can be extremely helpful when it comes to finding inner peace. Visualize yourself achieving these goals and how you will feel once you’ve accomplished them. It’s important not only to do it, but also put emotion into it—the more emotional you are, even if it is with excitement, anger or sadness, etc., the more likely you are to achieve your goals.
